A security guard was strangled to death by a python in front of terrified onlookers today outside a luxury hotel on Indonesia's resort island of Bali.

Ambar Arianto Mulyo, 59, who worked at a nearby restaurant, had offered to help capture the 15ft-long snake which had been spotted several times near the hotel in Bali's Sanur area.

Mulyo managed to secure the snake's head and tail and put it on his shoulders, according to  Agung Bawa, an assistant security manager at the hotel, which is closed for renovations until 2015.

But the python wrapped itself around his body and strangled him to death, Bawa said.

People watching the incident were unable to help and called the police, who came but failed to save the man.

The python escaped into nearby bushes and police were still searching for it.

The incident happened at around 3am as the python was crossing a road near the Bali Hyatt hotel.

'It happened so fast,' Bawa said. 'We were sad because we could not do anything to help him.'

Intelligent bystanders could have stopped the snake by ganging up on it. (1) Pythons don't "crush", they simply constrict and take what you give them. So when you exhale, they constrict and then you can't get in more air. They incrementally take your breathing away. (2) Their jaws are strong shutting, but terribly weak at opening. If bystanders had piled on and they'd duct taped the snake's head, it would not be able to open its mouth at all. If everybody piled on that thing and then took a knife to its neck, they could have killed it. But they were afraid and ignorant.

No bali for me and my kids. We stayed a view time at Bali Hyatt in Sanur. Love it and enjoyed every minute but with a snake crawling around... Not save to go there. Hope they kill it soon, or it might kill another person.

When he managed to secure the snake's head and tail and put it on his shoulders this is when it all went wrong never mess with nature

I think that the moment the person put the pyhon over his shoulders ,he had already signed his death warrant himself . No point in blaming the helpless onlookers.

Nothing a crowd of people could do to save the man? How about everyone grab a knife from the restararnts and hotels around, tire irons from the cars, large nearby rocks, ANYTHING to use as a weapons and beat, stab and crush that snake until it let the man go. What a lot of wimps ...making excuses as they watch a man die.

Why are they "still searching" for it? It did what it did, because it felt threatened, not because it wanted to eat the idiot that put it round his neck!!
